Wisdom teeth are the last large flat teeth at the back of the mouth. They are known as wisdom teeth because they are the last to erupt in your mouth. If they get infected, they may require removal. In this article, I will walk through the foods to eat after wisdom teeth removal. 

But before jumping onto the main topic, let’s first understand what happens during and after wisdom teeth removal. 

What happens during and after wisdom teeth removal?

Wisdom tooth surgery can be simple forceps extraction or may involve the removal of bone and soft tissues to remove the tooth. Also, impacted teeth involve more aggressive bone and soft tissue removal. 

In simple forcep extraction, the teeth are luxated with an elevator and removed with a forcep. Such extractions are known as simple non-traumatic extractions. The damage at the surgical site results in an empty tooth socket with swollen gums. Depending on the size of the wound, you may or may not need a suture to close the wound. 

Surgical removal of the teeth requires cutting and removal of bone and soft tissues to take the tooth out. 

You will experience the following symptoms during the first 2-3 after surgery:

  • The swelling increases for 2 or 3 days after the surgery and then decreases in size. It completely disappears in a week or so. 
  • You may experience difficulty in mouth opening due to trauma at the back of the mouth and soreness of jaw muscles.
  • The wound will bleed for 12-24 hours after the surgery.
  • Intense pain is felt in the wound and pain on swallowing as the anesthetic effect disappears. 
  • Earache on the side of surgery may be felt.
  • You may experience some bruising on the face and neck. 

Moreover, the impacted wisdom removal from the lower arch may cause numbness of the lower lip and tongue for a few days to months. 

All these tissue responses will make your normal eating difficult, and you need to switch to a healthy, nutritious diet that is not only soft but contains all nutrients required for healing.

Look into the foods you can eat quickly after wisdom teeth removal. Also, you must eat different foods to provide your body with all the essential nutrients required for healing.

What can I eat right after wisdom teeth removal

The pain is most intense within 6 hours after the anesthesia wears off. It is also advised to avoid food before the anesthesia wears off.

So, on the day of surgery, sip on liquids such as milkshakes, warm milk, fruit smoothies, and warm bone or vegetable broth. Avoid drinking with a straw, as it would dislodge the clot. 

Avoid any solid foods on the day of surgery as it would be hard to chew them due to pain and difficulty in mouth opening. 

Moreover, you can also take protein supplements mixed with water. 

Please ensure to get 64oz of decaffeinated drinks to prevent dehydration. Take a few sips of protein-rich liquids after every few hours. You need to take 70-80 gm of protein daily for the healing.

What can I eat on day 2 after wisdom teeth removal 

You will probably feel a bit better on day 2. However, mouth opening and energy to chew food will still be compromised. If you feel better, you can add soft creamy foods to your diet, such as 

  • Mashed potatoes made with milk and blend it to fluid consistency with no solid chunks.  
  • Cream of wheat or rice made with milk to a paste that can be easily swallowed. 

Nausea is common after surgery and is often felt after the pain medication. Eating a spoonful of mashed potatoes or yogurt before the medications and taking medication with a glass of plain water  help with nausea. 

Sore throat and pain in swallowing are not uncommon after the surgery due to muscle soreness. Blend the food to soupy consistency so it is easy to swallow.

What can I eat on day 3 after wisdom teeth removal 

Continue the above foods on day 3. It may be most difficult for you to eat on day 3 because the swelling peaks between 36-72 hours after the surgery and then begins to resolve. Swelling and jaw stiffness causes difficulty in eating. 

What can I eat on day 4 after wisdom teeth removal 

On day four, the swelling begins to reduce in size. You can add soft foods if you can tolerate them. Don’t force yourself to eat solids if you can’t chew it.

What can I eat on day five after wisdom teeth removal 

From day 5, add some solid foods such as scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, egg sandwiches, mac and cheese, cooked noodles, scrambled or poached eggs, egg sandwiches, etc. Replace one meal at a time with solid foods.

You can discontinue shakes if you can tolerate soft meals.

Break your food into 5-6 meals a day and ensure you are taking all the nutrients. 

Eat more often as you won’t be able to eat a lot. Take six smaller meals rather than three big meals a day.

Mix high energy into other foods (e.g., add butter or cream to mashed potatoes, feta cheese on steamed vegetables, or avocado and cream).

What can I eat on day 5 after wisdom teeth removal 

On day 5, you will feel much better. There is a marked reduction in pain and swelling by day 5. You can add chicken or turkey breast or drumstick without skin or sausages and beef tenderloin in your diet. 

What can I eat on day 6 after wisdom teeth removal 

On day 6, continue the above diet for another day. If you feel better, replace one meal with your regular food. 

What to eat a week after wisdom teeth removal

You can resume your regular diet a week after wisdom tooth removal. After a week, the wound surface shows the signs of healing with minor signs of inflammation. However, bone filling in the socket takes 6-8 months. Also, you can open your mouth without discomfort. 

Now you can get back to your regular diet if you feel alright. Still, the extraction wound is not entirely healed, so avoid hard, crunchy foods that can damage and hurt the healing wound. 

Different macro and micro-nutrients you need to consume to accelerate healing

Nutrition plays a vital role in wound healing and is often overlooked. Poor nutrition is linked to delayed healing with increased risk of infection. Carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals are all required for quick recovery.

Let’s look into different foods that are required for healing. You can split these foods throughout the day, ensuring you provide all the nutrients to your body by the end of the day. 

Protein-rich foods

Protein is needed to make new healthy tissues. Amino acids such as arginine and glutamine are non-essential amino acids and play a major role in healing. 

Foods rich in protein include:

  • Red meat, chicken, turkey, and fish (salmon, haddock) 
  • Bone broth (wait till it cools down)
  • Whole grains (brown rice and oats)
  • Scrambled or boiled eggs
  • Dairy products, e.g., milk, soft cheese, yogurt
  • Sausages

You can also incorporate protein-rich foods at each meal to increase your protein intake.

a Good Carbohydrates intake 

Carbohydrates are essential for insulin production, which supports the processes that build new tissues. They release energy to facilitate new blood vessel formation, cell multiplication, collagen synthesis, and increase white cell activity. However, excessive sugar intake elevates blood sugar levels in your body, negatively impacting the healing process by decreasing white cell activity and increasing the risk of infection. 

Add oatmeal, chicken and whole-wheat sandwiches, mac and cheese, cooked noodles, or mashed potatoes to your diet.  

Healthy fats intake 

Fats play a key role in absorbing fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, omega 3, and 6 in your diet. 

The energy released from fats also helps in new blood vessel formation, collagen synthesis, and cellular multiplication. 

These foods include oily fish (salmon), avocados, eggs, and nuts.

You can add nuts such as almonds, cashews, or walnuts to your smoothies, as they may be difficult to chew for the first few days after the surgery.

Adequate hydration 

What to drink after wisdom teeth removal: Consumption of adequate fluid intake is essential for wound healing. Hydration affects both wound healing and skin turgor. Try to drink 1.5 liters of water per day to keep yourself hydrated. 

Drink fluids that provide energy, such as milk, milkshakes, smoothies, and water.

Intake of viatmins and minerals rich foods

Milkshakes and fruit smoothies contain vitamins, minerals (especially zinc and iron), and antioxidants for wound healing. 

You can’t eat nuts because they are hard to chew. However, you can add them to your smoothies. You can try cashew and date smoothies. 

Cashew and date smoothie recipe 

Adding this smoothie to your diet will give you omega 3 and 6, packed in cashews and vitamins A, C, D, K, phosphorous, potassium, calcium, and magnesium from dates. 

Here is the recipe you can try:

Ingredients

  • Half a cup of cashews. Soak them overnight or for 30 minutes in hot boiling water to soften them. 
  • 3-4 majdool dates or any dates that are available at home. Soak them in hot water for 10 mins to soften them
  • One banana 
  • ¾ cup of almond or cow’s milk
  • A few ice cubes
  • 1/3 cup of rolled oats 
  • A few drops of organic vanilla essence to give a nice vanilla flavor 
  •  ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon 
  • One pinch of nutmeg
  • Chopped chocolate for garnishing 

Directions 

  • Add all the ingredients to the blender and blend it until it becomes a smoothie.
  • Pour it into the glass and garnish it with chopped chocolate. 
  • Please don’t use a straw as it may dislodge the clot. 

Cold and frozen foods – ice cream and chilled fruit yogurt

Frozen foods such as ice cream and chilled yogurt may be beneficial immediately after the surgery as cold foods stop bleeding from the surgery site.

What to avoid after wisdom tooth extraction 

There is a list of foods you need to avoid after wisdom tooth removal:

  • Hot drinks such as coffee and tea can cause bleeding in the wound.
  • Seeded fruits can get stuck in your wound and may lead to infection.
  • Spicy foods can cause a burning sensation in the wounded and damaged tissue.
  • Hard and sharps foods such as crackers may be challenging to chew and can damage your wound.
  • Alcohol intake delays tissue healing and cell repair.
  • Avoid drinking carbonated drinks as excess sugar intake can impair white cell function and cause tissue infection. 

Moreover, don’t use straws, suck, or smoke. This will create negative pressure in the mouth that can dislodge the clot and cause bleeding.

Recovery time and home care 

It is recommended to relax and take the rest of the day off after the surgery. You can do light activity from the next if you feel better.  

It usually takes seven days to get back to a regular diet.

Rinse your mouth after 24 hours with warm saline rinses after every meal. Add a teaspoon of sea salt in half a glass of lukewarm water and stir it till it dissolves. 

It is also advised to rinse your mouth with 0.12% chlorhexidine for seven days to reduce the occurrence of dry sockets and fasten healing. 

Take painkillers and antibiotics as prescribed by your dentist.
